Network Meeting
9 July 2008

The Midlands UKES network haven't had a meeting for some time, so we have decided to hold a short meeting on July 9th 2-4pm at Research House in Coventry. The last meeting we had asking people what they would like from the network, or to give to the network was almost four years ago. I'm sure things have changed in that time. Please come along and give your input, catch up with the network and meet new members. We want to arrange network sessions that are appropriate for what people want.

The event is FREE.

Please note that Debs Sambor is away from 29th June to 7th July, so if you have any queries you will have to catch her before then at debs@indigogroup.co.uk

Does British aid to poor countries work?  Is the Department for International Development accountable for results?  Is it a learning organization?  These evaluation issues will be explored during a special event of the UKES London Network to be held on 17 July 2008.

Given tight budgetary constraints and the rapid expansion of United Kingdom funding for global poverty reduction, aid effectiveness has become an issue of salient political importance.  The Independent Advisory Committee for Development Impact (IADCI) was established in November 2007 by the Secretary of State for International Development.

The Committee consists of six members and includes a participant observer from the National Audit Office and a senior civil servant with evaluation expertise.  Its remit is to assess the independence and effectiveness of the evaluation function at the Department for International Development (DFID); to track the use of evaluation results; and to attest to the relevance of DFID’s evaluation program.

To explore the potential contribution of IACDI to the development effectiveness of British aid as well as kick off a debate about the role of evaluation in development assistance, the meeting will host a panel consisting of David Peretz, Chair of IACDI; Robert Picciotto, Committee member, and Nick York, Director of Evaluation, Department of International Development.  Ample time will be devoted to discussion and informal networking.

Registration will be open at 3:00 pm.  The session will start promptly at 3.30pm and last till 6.00 pm.  Refreshments will be available.  The event is free to UKES member.  The charge of £23.50 for non-UKES members is payable in advance.

Scottish Evaluation Network
fadeline

The Scottish Evaluation Network (SEN) was founded in February 2003.

The need for a more local evaluation forum was suggested at UKES conference and an inaugural meeting in Glasgow confirmed that there was a high level of interest.

The purpose of SEN is to facilitate local debate and learning around topics that the members request. Communication is mainly via email, although we run three to four workshops/seminars each year. Recent topics covered have included 'Michael Scriven's Pot Pourri of Hot Topics in Evaluation,' ' Approaches to Evaluation,' and 'Working Whole Systems.' There is no fee for joining SEN, although there is a charge for any events attended (discounted for UKES members)."

To join the network you simply join the discussion list. To do this you can either e-mail
Mark Livingston (m.livingston@socsci.gla.ac.uk) or
Helen Alexander (Helen.Alexander@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk) or go to
JISC mail web site http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/Scot-Eval-Net.html

One of our most important functions is to enable communication across the evaluation community in Scotland, so anyone joining the mailing list can post to others. We have membership across the disciplines (e.g. health, local government, academia, independent consultants) and encourage participation from commissioners, practitioners and people who just want to learn more about evaluation.

We have a core organising group that responds to members' requests and maintains the momentum of SEN. This group meets regularly to debate progress and future direction.

SEN receives sponsorship from The Scottish Executive, NHS Health Scotland and Communities Scotland.

1. Recent SEN events
Theories of Change( 13th March 2008) at the Teacher Building, Glasgow was a very successful event with clear, stimulating presentations from Avril Blamey and Helen Sullivan.  Anecdotal feedback at the event was very positive – comments included that it made Theories of Change very understandable and that it now seemed much more practical than theoretical.

2. Update on planned events

8th September 2008 – Approaches to Evaluation
Location: Glasgow (tbc)
Cathy Sharp and Mark Bitel’s annual event - in Glasgow this year to ensure rotation of venues.

14th October 2008 – Whole systems

North West Evaluation Network
fadeline

NWEN has been established for four years and currently has over 80 members across the North West, based in a variety of organisations - health, local government and other public agencies, voluntary sector, universities – as well as freelance. They are involved in evaluation in fields such as health and healthcare, social work, education, regeneration, employment, and youth work.

The group was set up in response to a need expressed locally from both the statutory and voluntary sectors, for support in doing and using evaluation as well as help in identifying evaluators to collaborate with.

A series of events is held annually with many of the seminars and workshops provided for free.
Membership of NWEN is open to UKES members and non-members. We have an email list, run by an e-coordinator, and members receive regular e-bulletins.
