Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

Impact Evaluation of “People at the Centre of Communication and Information Technologies” (PACCIT) Research Programme"

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is seeking to commission an evaluation of the recently completed research programme: “People at the Centre of Communication and Information Technologies” (PACCIT).  The evaluation will assess the impact of PACCIT on policy-makers, professional practitioners and other groups outside academia.

The PACCIT Programme aimed to explore the interactions between people, computers and organisations, and how information and communication technologies could be designed to support these more effectively.   It was funded by the ESRC, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the (then) Department of Trade and Industry, through the LINK programme (a government initiative involving the research councils and government departments with interests in research and development).

The purpose of this evaluation will be to:

  • Identify and assess the ways in which PACCIT has achieved impact through its dissemination, networking, research and related activities, including its academic/business collaborations and knowledge transfer.
  • Document specific impacts resulting from PACCIT
  • Identify best practice and lessons for further ESRC/EPSRC research and future industrial collaborations

Impact Evaluation of the ESRC Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is seeking to commission an assessment of the policy and practice impact of its Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE).  This will include impact on policy-makers, professional practitioners and other groups outside academia, in the UK and beyond.  The study will identify how the Centre’s research results have been used by policy-makers and practitioners.

The main aims and objectives of the case study are:

  • to identify examples of impact achieved, in the UK and beyond,
  • to identify the ways in which the Centre’s research has achieved impact
  • to provide a critical reflection on methods used (a) by the Centre to achieve impact and (b) by the evaluator to identify and assess impacts

CSERGE is based at the University of East Anglia, and was funded by the ESRC for 16 years (1991-2007).  Research at the Centre explored the causes, consequences and policy implications of global environmental change, focusing on policy issues such as global warming, global biological diversity and institutional adaptation to global environmental change.  Information about the Centre can be found at http://www.uea.ac.uk/env/cserge/.
