Online Journal Club – NEW
Inaugural meeting of the Online Journal Club
We are piloting a new format to share learning amongst members of the Society by asking authors of journal articles to share and discuss their papers online. Taking part in a Journal Club is very similar to taking part in a Book Club but can be organised in different ways suited to the material being discussed. Just like a book club you are asked to read a journal article in advance so you can discuss it with others. The person who chooses the article, or in this case the author, usually provides an overview of the methodological approach or findings described in the paper, before opening up the discussion to the group.
Journal clubs can involve group members critically reviewing an article using critical appraisal tools particularly when the aim is to develop skills in evidence synthesis. Or they can provide an opportunity for group members to discuss the applicability and adaptability of a proposed methodology to their area of research and evaluation.
We are pleased to say that Kathryn Oliver will be discussing one of her papers Evaluating unintended consequences: New insights into solving practical, ethical and political challenges of evaluation in our first journal club at 11.15 am on Wednesday 17th June.
Kathryn is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The chosen paper is Olive, L., Lorenc, T., Tinkler, J. (2020). Evaluating unintended conseequences: New insights into solving practical, ethical and political challenges of evaluation. Evaluation, 2020, Vol. 26(1) 61-75. https://journals.
